Communication For Divers presented at the National Marine Educators Conference July 2007 www.gommea.org/downeast2007/
Communication for Divers (C4D) is a newly codified international system of approximately 300 hand signals. These signs were carefully constructed to articulate messages that are internationally iconic and designed to raise awareness for conservation. C4D is specific to the aquatic realm- respectful of both physical constraints and cultural referents of being underwater, providing a framework for scuba divers to appropriately interact with the marine environment.
C4D and the Communication Diver specialty course were developed by a PADI scuba instructor who is also a nationally certified sign language interpreter.
Anyone who participates in scuba diving – commercial, professional, recreational, scientific and technical divers- will benefit from using the International Dictionary of Hand Signals for Scuba Divers and taking the PADI-sanctioned Communication Diver Specialty Course.
